I've always liked the combination of light, glass, and color. When Jeff and I visited Venice's satellite islands of Murano and Burano, I received ample doses of all three. Burano's brightly-colored homes seem to have been painted by children. As we waited in the noonday heat for a plate of otherworldly risotto at the Trattoria al Gatto Nero, we amused ourselves by taking photos of the bottles and glasses on the table. I fell in love with the abstract shapes this created, and I'm certain that this will not be my last painting of glasses.

I've never used this much cadmium red light (that really vivid red/orange) in my life, and I layered it over plenty of cadmium yellow light and medium. Alizarine crimson plus various blues and purples combined for the darker areas. I enjoy the way this range of colors works together. It's also just plain fun to use colors this blazingly bright. It nearly gave me a suntan (gasp!). The petals created areas of pure abstraction that reminded me of slot canyons and volcanoes, both of which I love.
